Verbal Abuse Survivors Speak Out; On relationship and recovery
By Patricia Evans
Review
Abuse comes in many forms, but until recently, the verbal variety has been overlooked. No more. With her Verbally Abusive Relationship (1992), Evans helped open the floodgates and subsequently heard from hundreds who saw their troubling relationships in a new light. This follow-up book is about the experiences of those respondents--women controlled by their husbands, robbed of their self-esteem, trapped and afraid to speak up or get out. In the book's first part, Evans discusses verbally abusive relationships, different forms of abuse and how to identify them, and the characteristics of abusers. In the second, she talks about survivors and how they have reclaimed their lives from abusive relationships. Interwoven throughout the book are the testimonies of such women; cumulatively, these voices convey a feeling of solidarity with readers who might be enduring similar relationships. Written along the lines of many 12-step self-helpers, this is one of the more solid examples of the genre.
